About this track

Git tracks your history; GitHub is where teams build on it together. Pull requests, code review, issues, automated tests and releases are how modern software - from weekend projects to the largest companies - gets made.

You’ve just joined Dungeon Dash, a scrappy open-source retro game, as a volunteer. You’ll set up repositories and SSH keys, write great READMEs, triage issues, open and review pull requests, choose merge methods, and contribute through forks. Then you’ll automate the project with GitHub Actions - workflows, CI pipelines, matrices, secrets and deployments - and finish like a maintainer: semantic versioning, releases, security features and the gh CLI and API. Along the way you’ll run workflow job graphs, follow a pull request’s life, and spot problems in diffs and workflow files. Every exercise is a Python helper of the kind maintainers really write, and the capstone builds a release bot.

Before you start
  • The basics of Git: commits, branches and remotes (the Git track covers them).
  • Basic Python for the exercises: strings, lists, loops and functions.
  • A free GitHub account is handy for trying things, but not required.
