Close, accept, or decline
Finish the negotiation cleanly and keep relationships intact.
- Confirm final terms in writing before accepting.
- Know when to stop negotiating.
- Decline other offers gracefully.
Negotiations end with a decision. How you close matters: you will work with these people, and you may meet the companies you decline again. Finish clearly, in writing, and on good terms.
Closing well
- Know when to stop. After one or two rounds with meaningful movement, further pushing has diminishing returns. Accept when the offer meets your target.
- Get it in writing. Before accepting, get the updated offer letter with every agreed term: base, bonus target, equity amount and vesting, signing bonus and clawback terms, start date, level, and title.
- Accept clearly and confirm next steps, such as the background check and start date.
- Decline other offers promptly and graciously. Thank the recruiter and team; you may want to work there later.
- Resign professionally from your current job after the new offer is signed and any conditions are met.
Offers are rarely withdrawn because of a polite, professional negotiation. They are more at risk from ultimatums, dishonesty, or dragging a process out for weeks. Keep your tone collaborative from the first number to the final signature.
Key takeaways
Stop after meaningful movement; don’t over-negotiate.
Get every term in writing before accepting.
Decline other offers graciously and resign professionally.
